University of Management and Technology held a seminar on “Restructuring Bureaucracy in Pakistan” in which Vice Chancellor Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) Dr. Nadeem ul Haque, Bureaucrat Fawad Hassan Fawad and Ex-Governor State Bank Dr. Ishrat Hussain were the chief guests.

Rector UMT Dr. Asif Raza, Acting President UMT Lt Gen Javed Hasan (Retd), Director School of Governance and Society (SGS) Dr. Aisha Azhar, senior management, faculty and students were also present. Director SGS Dr. Aisha Azhar warmly welcomed the chief guests and gave an introduction about governance, the ineffective rule of law and the actual role of civil servants.

Vice Chancellor PIDE Dr. Nadeem ul Haque expressed that unfortunately Pakistan lacks a proper governance system. Critical review of the bureaucratic structure is the need of the hour. Dr. Nadeem shared that training for the civil servants is the same as in the 1950s and has hardly changed, cash salaries are very low but they are given a huge number of perks that are unseen to the world. Proposing a solution, Dr. Nadeem advised a deep and serious reform of the entire system in order to make our nation a progressive one.

The biggest source of change should be universities and the education system, he added.

Bureaucrat Fawad Hassan Fawad expressed that it is a pleasure to be here at UMT. Speaking on the topic he said that there is a strong need to restructure and reform the civil service in Pakistan.
