LAHORE – Bank of Punjab (BOP) issued clarification in response to reports circulating in sections of the media regarding an alleged cyberattack on the Bank, stating that such claims are inaccurate and misleading.
The Bank said during routine monitoring of its systems, certain irregular credit card transactions were identified, following which an immediate internal review was initiated. The review determined that the transactions occurred due to a temporary technical malfunction in the credit card system. This system issue enabled a limited number of the Bank’s existing credit card customers to carry out unauthorized transactions.
It clarified that the affected customers were not linked to any specific government scheme or program, including the Asaan Karobar Card. The issue impacted a specific group of the Bank’s general credit card holders and was not associated with any targeted initiative.
Bank categorically denied reports suggesting a cyberattack, emphasizing that the incident was purely technical in nature. It further stated that the identified system gap has since been fully rectified. Additionally, the system update carried out on Friday, 2 January 2026, was unrelated to this credit card issue.
Recovery actions have been initiated in accordance with the Bank’s standard operating procedures. BOP stated that most of the affected customers have already come forward and begun settling the over-limit amounts.
All necessary corrective and remedial measures are being implemented, it added. Claims circulating regarding the total amount involved have been termed speculative, exaggerated, and incorrect, with the Bank maintaining that the situation remains fully manageable.
BOP confirmed that all impacted credit card holders have been directly contacted and informed. Customers who have not received any communication from BOP remain unaffected and have no reason for concern.
It also cautioned customers to remain vigilant against unauthorized approaches and advised them to engage only with duly authorized Bank officials after proper verification. Customers have been urged not to entertain individuals whose legitimacy is doubtful.
For further information or clarification, customers may contact the BOP helpline at +92-42-111-267-200. The Bank stated that this clarification has been issued in the larger public interest as part of its ongoing efforts to raise awareness about the increasing prevalence of cyber fraud.
