PAKISTAN-US relationship has always remained highly significant, though it has witnessed several ups and downs over the decades. However, in recent months, there appears to be a renewed momentum in bilateral relations. Since the assumption of office by President Donald Trump, both sides seem to have shown a greater willingness to strengthen engagement and explore areas of mutual benefit.
The visit of a delegation of US congressmen and businessmen to Islamabad should be viewed in this broader context. Such interactions provide an opportunity to move beyond traditional areas of cooperation and focus on expanding economic partnerships, investment and trade. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar’s remarks during his meeting with the delegation that Pakistan is confident of doubling bilateral trade with the United States to $20 billion over the next five years reflect this growing optimism. The target does not appear unrealistic given the existing state of relations. The United States is Pakistan’s largest single-country export destination and goods trade between the two countries reached $9.4 billion in the last fiscal year. These figures are encouraging and indicate that there is considerable room for further growth if both sides are able to fully utilize the complementarities of their economies. Pakistan remains an important supplier of goods, particularly textiles, while it is also a major importer of US products, including cotton, machinery, technology and capital goods. The growing demand for advanced technology and industrial inputs in Pakistan offers significant opportunities for American businesses, while Pakistan can benefit from greater investment, expertise and market access. The presence of more than 80 US companies in Pakistan demonstrates that confidence in the country’s economic potential exists. There is immense potential for cooperation in areas ranging from trade and investment to energy, technology, agriculture and manufacturing, which can be harnessed through enhanced engagement and interaction at different levels.
