Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi formed a 3-member inquiry committee on the alleged drug-selling issue in Islamia University Bahawalpur.
It is worth mentioning here that the recent arrests of university officials and allegations of drug abuse and sexual exploitation at Islamia University Bahawalpur (IUB) are both shocking and disturbing. Such disgraceful incidents tarnish the sanctity of educational institutions, warranting immediate action and through investigation.
It is essential to approach this sensitive matter with utmost seriousness and responsibility. The allegations against IUB officials, including chief of security and teachers, cannot be taken lightly. Due to the severity of charges, it is crucial that investigation into this matter be conducted with the highest level of impartiality and transparency.
The reputation of the entire university is at stake, and any indication of bias or negligence during the inquiry could have long-lasting repercussions on the academic institution’s credibility.
Higher education institutions play a critical role in shaping the future of the nation by nurturing young minds and imparting knowledge.
Any involvement of university officials, teachers or staff in drug peddling or exploiting vulnerable students and colleagues is not only morally repugnant but also undermines the very essence of academia.
Vice Chancellor of the University Prof Dr Athar Mehboob is a well-known name under whose leadership, the university has achieved many milestones.
He has written a letter to Inspector General Police Dr Usman Anwar, requesting to constitute a high level team to investigate the matter. In addition, he has also constituted two inquiry committees to probe cases registered against the treasurer and chief security officers of the university.
This shows a keen desire on his part to uncover the truth. Universities are meant to be sanctuaries of knowledge and growth, where students and staff alike feel safe and supported.
The Vice Chancellor’s call for a thorough investigation not only aims to address the current situation but it will also give much needed confidence to parents and students alike.
If arrested persons are found guilty of any crime, they should be dealt with full application of law. Such elements deserve no mercy at all. Doing so will help avert such incidents in future. We will also suggest the IUB and other universities to prioritise implementation of robust monitoring systems within their campuses to ensure a safe learning environment.
