NEW DELHI – Unofficial results from elections held across five Indian states indicate significant political shifts, with the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) emerging in a strong position in several regions, while a new political entrant has made notable gains in Tamil Nadu.
The Indian media reportes that the NDA has secured 92 seats in Assam’s 126-member assembly, comfortably crossing the simple majority threshold of 64 seats required to form the government.
In Tamil Nadu, actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay has made a striking electoral debut, with his party winning 108 seats in the 234-member assembly. The majority mark in the state stands at 118, placing his party in a leading position and within reach of forming the government, potentially with support from allies.
A major political upset has been reported in West Bengal, where the BJP is leading on 206 seats in the 294-member assembly, well above the 148-seat requirement for a majority. In contrast, the All India Trinamool Congress led by former chief minister Mamata Banerjee is trailing with around 80 seats, indicating a significant setback for the incumbent leadership.
In the Union Territory of Puducherry, the NDA alliance has won 18 seats in the 33-member assembly, surpassing the 17-seat mark needed to form the government.
The results, though unofficial, suggest a changing political landscape in India, with the BJP consolidating its position in key regions while new political forces emerge to challenge established parties.
Final results are expected to be confirmed by the Election Commission following completion of vote counting.
