ABU DHABI/DUBAI – Pakistan announced a change to passport services for its citizens in the UAE. From July 20, Pakistani missions in Abu Dhabi and Dubai will accept only e-Passport applications, while new applications for traditional Machine Readable Passports (MRPs) will no longer be processed.
Pakistani diplomatic mission in the Gulf nation announced that from 20 July 2026, passport offices in Abu Dhabi and Dubai will only accept applications for e-Passports, bringing an end to new applications for traditional Machine Readable Passports (MRPs).
The move is a major step toward modernizing Pakistan’s passport system for citizens living abroad. According to Pakistani diplomatic missions, the decision is aimed at providing overseas Pakistanis with more secure, technologically advanced, and internationally compliant travel documents.
Under the new policy, all fresh passport applications submitted at the passport sections in Abu Dhabi and Dubai will be processed exclusively under the e-Passport category. However, officials have reassured citizens that existing Machine Readable Passports will remain fully valid until their expiry date, meaning current MRP holders do not need to replace their passports immediately and can continue traveling without interruption.
To ensure smooth transition, authorities confirmed that the online passport application service for overseas Pakistanis will continue to operate, allowing applicants to conveniently submit requests for new e-Passports without unnecessary delays or inconvenience.
e-Passport features an embedded electronic chip that securely stores the holder’s biometric and personal information. Officials say this advanced technology is expected to significantly strengthen document security, reduce the risk of forgery, speed up immigration clearance, and improve the overall international travel experience for Pakistani citizens.
Pakistani diplomatic mission urged all Pakistanis residing in the UAE to apply under the e-Passport system for any new passport issuance or renewal after 20 July 2026. Citizens seeking further guidance are advised to contact the relevant Pakistani Embassy or Consulate.
