Authorities slap Rs3.68m fines on profiteers

Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi chaired a meeting to review ongoing measures for controlling the prices of essential commodities, actions against profiteers, and resolving traffic problems caused by bachat bazaars in District East.

The meeting included Additional Commissioner Karachi I Ghulam Mehdi Shah, deputy commissioners, assistant commissioners, and officers from the Bureau of Supply Department. Assistant Commissioner Headquarters, Rabia Syed, presented a report detailing actions taken against profiteers and shopkeepers illegally selling LPG.

Similarly, Assistant Commissioner Revenue Sajjad Abro reported on anti-encroachment measures, while Assistant Commissioner General Hazim Bangwar outlined progress in addressing citizens’ complaints related to civic issues.

Bangwar informed the meeting that Karachi Electric (KE), the Water and Sewerage Corporation, and town administrations, including the KMC, had been tasked with immediate resolution of complaints.

The meeting highlighted actions taken between December 8 and 20, revealing that assistant commissioners-imposed fines totaling Rs 3.68 million against profiteers across various districts.

Notable fines included: District South: Rs 1.3 million, District East: Rs 235,000, District West: Rs 183,000, District Central: Rs 308,000, District Malir: Rs 75,000, District Keamari: Rs 291,000, District Korangi: Rs 138,000, Additionally, Bureau of Supply officers levied Rs 266,000 in fines against profiteers. Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqv instructed assistant commissioners to ensure the display of price lists in markets and verify that citizens could purchase items at listed prices.

Continuous monitoring of prices for two to three hours in key markets was recommended. The meeting also focused on improving the auction system at Sabzi Mandi, ensuring all commodities are included in auctions to stabilize prices.

The meeting addressed the traffic challenges caused by Sunday bazaars in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, particularly at Alla Din Park and Time Square.
