August 5 to be Holiday in Pakistan for Youm-e-Istehsaal?

ISLAMABAD – August 5 is here, and Pakistan will mark Youm-e-Istehsal on Wednesday to extend support for Kashmiris’ right to self-determination, and many people are wondering whether the day will be observed as a public holiday.

Amid rumors and unverified posts on social media, a notification settled the debate, making it clear what citizens can expect on Wednesday.  As per the notification, the federal government has now stepped in to set the record straight, as Wednesday, August 5, 2026, is not going to be a holiday.

August 5 Holiday

As per Cabinet Division’s notification, a nationwide one-minute silence at 9:00 a.m. to mark Youm-e-Istehsaal, in solidarity with people living in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

The notification came on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s directions, and it asks all ministries, government departments, and related institutions to make sure the silence is observed properly, in a coordinated way.

There is no mention of shutting down government departments, schools, banks, or private businesses. So unless a province decides to issue its own order, it’s business as usual across the country. So far, no province has shared an update on the August 5 holiday.

Social media users are urged to stop believing random posts online, and just wait for actual notifications from federal or provincial governments before assuming anything about holidays.

Every year, Pakistan observes Youm-e-Istehsaal on Aug 5 to remember what happened on this date back in 2019, and to reaffirm its support,  politically and diplomatically, for the Kashmiri cause. Normally that means official events, awareness campaigns, and symbolic programs across the country.
