A recent audit report has uncovered massive financial irregularities worth millions within the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) and the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA).

The report highlights unauthorized payments made by both entities, amounting to Rs. 4.8 million in utility allowances by the SSWMB and Rs. 17.4 million by the SBCA. The audit strongly criticized these payments as a direct violation of financial regulations and recommended an immediate halt to the SSWMB’s utility allowances.

It further suggested that the funds paid without authorization be recovered from the responsible officials. Despite being asked to explain these unauthorized payments in October 2023, no response has yet been provided by the administration of either organization.

In a related development, Karachi police recently arrested a senior officer from the SBCA, Assistant Director Sarfaraz Jamali, for alleged involvement in illegal construction activities across the city. During the arrest, police recovered a staggering Rs. 220 million in cash from his vehicle. Sources indicated that this money was purportedly being transferred to those running operations under an “influential person.” Jamali has since been moved to an undisclosed location for further investigation into the case. These findings have sparked calls for increased oversight and accountability in Sindh’s public institutions as authorities work to address these alarming discrepancies.
