LAHORE — As millions continue to suffer from choking smog in Lahore, the government of Punjab is set to carry out artificial rain on November 11 and 12 in latest measure to address hazardous air quality, as Air Quality Levels soared to hazardous levels.
Environmental and Met Office started preparations for artificial rain in provincial capital on November 11 and 12 (Monday and Tuesday). Meteorological Department is monitoring conditions, with 30% chance of humidity in clouds, which is requisite for cloud seeding. Secretary Raja Jahangir Anwer said if conditions are favorable, this will be the first trial of artificial rain this season, using technology developed by Army Aviation.
Air Quality Index (AQI) in Lahore skyrocketed, Gulberg reported an AQI of 812, making it the most polluted area, while other neighborhoods such as Shadman and DHA recorded AQI levels of 736 and 712, respectively. Davis Road, Ghazi Road, and Ferozepur Road have also been heavily impacted by air pollution despite restrictions.
Amid smog crisis, Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider called for the declaration of a “smog emergency” across the province. He stressed serious health risks posed by the smog, which disrupted daily life, including education and business activities.
“People are facing significant health issues due to the smog, and it has severely affected routine operations,” Governor Khan stated. He urged the government to take swift and decisive action to address the growing threat of air pollution.
As Maryam Nawaz led government moves forward with artificial rain plan, officials are hopeful that this measure will provide temporary relief. However, they continue to emphasize the need for sustained actions to tackle the root causes of smog and improve the city’s air quality over the long term.
