KARACHI – Pakistan’s star athlete Arshad Nadeem clinched the gold medal in the javelin throw event at the 35th National Games being held in Karachi on Monday.
Arshad secured first position with an impressive throw of 81.81 metres, and maintained his dominance in the national arena.
According to event organisers, WAPDA’s Yasir Sultan won the silver medal with a throw of 70.77 metres.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Army’s Abrar Ali claimed the bronze medal after achieving a throw of 67.68 metres.
The 35th National Games were formally inaugurated in Karachi earlier this week, where Arshad Nadeem also lit the torch during the opening ceremony.
On Sunday, the 35th National Games kicked off with a grand opening ceremony at the National Stadium in Karachi.
The thousands of athletes from across the country attended the opening ceremony.
Speaking at the ceremony, Pakistan Olympic Association President Arif Saeed said participating in the National Games is a matter of pride for every athlete and praised the efforts made by the Sindh government in organising the event.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah stated that the provincial government aims to make the National Games in Karachi an exemplary and memorable event.
Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that the athletes participating today will become the star medal winners for Pakistan in the future.
Following the speeches, athletes took part in a march past, with defending champions Pakistan Army leading and the host Sindh team concluding the procession in front of the saluting podium. The athletes expressed their determination to deliver outstanding performances in the Games.
Before the formal commencement, Olympian Qamar Ibrahim brought the Games torch into the stadium, which was passed through Samir Hussain, Naseem Hameed, Saadi Abbas, and Islahuddin, finally reaching Arshad Nadeem, who ran a lap around the ground to light the National Games flame.
After the torch lighting, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari officially declared the Games open. The 35th National Games will continue across various venues in Karachi until December 13.
