A senior Awami National Party (ANP) leader and candidate for Dera Ismail Khan city mayor-ship was shot dead outside his house.
According to police sources, unidentified gunmen riding a motorbike targeted Umar Khatab Shirani outside his residence in the Model Town area, as a result of which he died on the spot. His body was shifted to a hospital for a post-mortem examination.
A spokesperson for the ANP, Samar Haroon Bilour, confirmed the death of the ANP candidate in the gun attack. “Omar Khitab Sherani, ANP Candidate for Tehseel Mayor of Dera Ismail Khan has been shot dead in front of his house !!” she tweeted. “We want justice and we want it now. This cannot go on any more. Umar Khatab was a candidate for DI Khan City mayorship in local body elections, first phase of which will be held on December 19 (Sunday).
In the second phase, LG polls will be held in 18 istricts of the province on Jan 16. Police have rushed to the crime scene and cordoned off the area while hunting for the attackers.
