Fame made her visible, scrutiny made her stronger
There is something almost cinematic about Alizeh Shah. She has the face of a classic Pakistani television heroine, the screen presence of a seasoned performer and, increasingly, the reputation of someone who refuses to neatly fit into the industry’s expectations of how a young actress should behave. At just 24, Shah has already lived through the kind of career highs and public scrutiny that can define an artist twice her age. From a supporting role in Choti Si Zindagi in 2016 to her breakout performance as Dua in Ehd e Wafa, she moved rapidly from promising newcomer to one of Pakistan’s most recognisable young television stars. Her performance in Ishq Tamasha earned her a Hum Award for Best Television Sensation Female, while leading roles in Hoor Pari, Jo Tu Chahey, Mera Dil Mera Dushman, Tanaa Banaa and Bebasi cemented her place among television’s most visible young faces. But Alizeh’s story has never been simply about pretty faces and prime time.
From ingenue to headline maker
Her rise was remarkably quick, but acting was not something she initially approached as a calculated route to fame. In a 2021 interview, when asked what first connected her to acting, she laughed and answered, “Cartoons!” She explained that she felt cartoons had more emotion than real actors and called that her first connection to performance. That sense of emotional instinct has remained central to her career. Speaking about her characters, she said earlier, “Each role becomes close to you because you learn something new.” Yet while audiences watched her characters evolve, they were also watching Alizeh herself. Her youthful image, fashion choices, social media presence and increasingly outspoken personality became almost as much a subject of conversation as her acting. She has faced criticism over everything from her appearance and clothing to viral videos and professional disputes. In 2021, she was criticised after appearing in a tank top in the music video for “Badnamiyan” and later faced backlash over her appearance at the Hum Style Awards. Her 2021 fall on the runway during Bridal Couture Week alongside singer Shazia Manzoor became another viral moment that followed her long after the event itself. Then came the more serious conversations around her reputation and professionalism. Some industry figures publicly described her as difficult to work with, including Yasir Nawaz, while other actors defended her. Feroze Khan, who had worked with Shah, described her as a young actress without the kind of media handling or industry schooling that often comes with experience.
Shah herself has consistently pushed back against the idea that being outspoken automatically makes her difficult. “There are always two sides to a story,” she said in her 2022 Dawn interview, explaining that she had sometimes refused to work with organisations because of pending payments. She also defended her right to ask for reasonable working conditions, saying, “If I have to get my make-up done in sweltering heat in a room that is not air-conditioned, isn’t it my right to ask the producer to make me more comfortable?”
The glamour, the backlash and the truth she wants to tell
Perhaps the most revealing thing about Alizeh Shah is that she has never appeared particularly interested in manufacturing a perfectly polished celebrity persona. In fact, she once admitted that she does not even enjoy interviews. “There’s always so much that I want to say that I end up not saying,” she told Dawn, adding that her words had been misinterpreted too many times. That fear of being misunderstood has seemingly followed her throughout her career. In 2025, Shah went considerably further, publicly speaking about what she described as harassment, bullying, delayed payments, exploitation and being pushed out of professional opportunities. “I’m going to expose every single person who did me wrong,” she declared, adding, “I’m done with people trolling me, making fun of me, and making memes out of me. You guys have no idea how difficult an actor’s life already is.” Most recently, in 2026, she has continued speaking publicly about professional boundaries and alleged inappropriate behaviour on set. In one account, she described an incident involving an unnamed co actor that she said made her uncomfortable. The allegations remain her account of events, but they have added another layer to an ongoing conversation about how young performers are treated within the entertainment industry. For Shah, honesty appears to have become less of a publicity strategy and more of a survival mechanism. “I don’t come from a media background,” she explained in her earlier Dawn interview. “I don’t have an entire battalion of supporters from the industry who will stand by me.” That sentence perhaps explains Alizeh Shah better than any headline ever could. She is glamorous, certainly. She is photogenic, bankable and capable of commanding attention without trying particularly hard. But beneath the glossy photographs is an actress who has spent much of her career learning that visibility comes with a price. And perhaps that is why she continues to speak. Because Alizeh Shah is no longer simply trying to be liked. She appears far more interested in being heard.
