Agro ecological zones will facilitate agricultural efficiency for climate friendly agriculture and enhancing yield of major crops in Punjab. This was said by Malik Nouman Ahmad Langarial, Minister for Agriculture Punjab in his message at the launch of agro-ecological zones of Punjab.
The launch ceremony was organized by Food & Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Agriculture Department, Punjab. Minister for Agriculture underlined that this agro-ecological zoning exercise will allow all stakeholders to adopt unique zonal requirements for enhancing yield by amending cropping system according to water availability, soil conditions and market demand.
The data compiled in the agro-ecological zoning report reveals the potential for crop diversification and enhancing vertical productivity of crops, he added. The Minister for Agriculture termed this initiative of agro-ecological zoning in Punjab as an important step towards climate friendly, revived and vibrant agriculture sector in Pakistan.
Mr. Banaras Khan, Program Officer (FAO) said that agro-ecological zones will help to enhance agricultural efficiency through successful adoption of cropping system and crops in a specified region depends on critical analysis of Agriculture climate and available resources for crops production.
Dr. Abid Mehmood, Director General Agriculture (Research) and Malik Muhammad Akram, Director General Agriculture (Water Management) also addressed the launch ceremony of agro-ecological zoning report.
