THE latest incidents along Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan are a matter of serious concern and once again highlight the threat of terrorism emanating from Afghan territory with the support of Afghan authorities. The drone incursion from Afghan territory and the attempted infiltration by Fitna al-Khawarij in the Kurram sector, followed by firing on Pakistani border posts, represent a dangerous pattern that cannot be ignored. Pakistan’s air defence systems intercepted the intruding drones, while security forces also foiled the infiltration attempt and responded to firing from Afghan positions.
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar very accurately highlighted the growing threat of terrorism emanating from Afghanistan while addressing the OIC Contact Group on Afghanistan on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. He called for concrete and verifiable action to ensure that Afghan soil is not used against neighbouring countries, particularly Pakistan. This concern is not confined to Pakistan. Other countries and international organizations have also highlighted the threat posed by terrorist groups in Afghanistan. The continued presence of terrorist groups in Afghanistan and their activities across borders have wider implications for regional stability. Afghanistan’s authorities instead of abetting and supporting terror groups have a responsibility to prevent their territory from being used for attacks against neighbouring states. Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar, in a post on X, made it clear that any violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty would be met with an immediate and decisive response. Indeed, Pakistan’s security forces have demonstrated on more than one occasion their capability to defend the country against threats from different adversaries. Instead of resorting to escalation, it would be far better for the Afghan side to take concrete action against terrorist groups and ensure that Afghan territory is not used for attacks against Pakistan. A stable, peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan is in the interest of the entire region and Pakistan has consistently expressed its support for such an Afghanistan.
