THE notification of Mahmood Khan Achakzai as Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly is a welcome development.
For months, the absence of an opposition leader had left a visible vacuum in parliamentary functioning, fueling disquiet within opposition ranks, particularly PTI over the delay in filling this constitutionally significant post. With the appointment finally completed, an important democratic requirement has been met.
The office of opposition leader is not a ceremonial one. In a functioning democracy, it serves as a vital pillar of accountability, oversight and alternative policymaking. The opposition leader represents dissent within the system, gives voice to concerns of those outside the ruling coalition, Achakzai’s elevation also carries political and symbolic weight. He has consistently called for a national dialogue among all political stakeholders to steer the country out of crisis. That call resonates strongly at a time when political temperatures remain high. Dialogue, indeed, is need of the hour. No single party, whether in government or opposition, can navigate Pakistan out of challenges in isolation. Meaningful engagement across party lines is essential to reduce confrontation, stabilise the system, and agree on minimum principles for democratic continuity. Such a process will not be smooth. There will be mistrust, setbacks and political hiccups along the way. Yet it is precisely the responsibility of opposition leader to persist with this path, to keep channels open and to prioritise national interest over partisan reflexes.
The appointment should also be seen as a confidence-building measure between government and opposition. One hopes this spirit will extend further, including early appointment of leader of opposition in the Senate, another critical office whose vacancy has also been keenly felt. Beyond these appointments, a genuinely conducive environment for dialogue must be created. For this, those sitting on treasury and opposition benches must stop trading fiery remarks and instead demonstrate political maturity, restraint and responsibility. The nation will be keenly watching conduct of its political leadership. At this critical juncture, there is an expectation that all parties will rise above point-scoring and not disappoint a public yearning for stability, consensus and democratic normalcy.
