Pakistan’s bowlers kept England under pressure on a rain-affected opening day of the second Test at Lord’s, with Mohammad Abbas taking four wickets.
Only 56 overs were possible after rain delayed the start, while bad light ended play early. England closed the day at 248/9, with Gus Atkinson unbeaten on 34 and Josh Tongue on one.
Abbas returned figures of 4/56, while Mohammad Ali claimed three wickets and Khurram Shahzad took one. Jordan Cox scored 55 and Jamie Smith made 61 for England, but both were dismissed in the final session as Pakistan mounted a strong fightback.
Earlier, Abbas removed openers Emilio Gay and Ben Duckett before dismissing captain Joe Root, while Ali accounted for Harry Brook. England were 80/4 before Cox and Dan Lawrence added 43, followed by a 60-run stand between Cox and Smith.
Pakistan captain Babar Azam won the toss and opted to field first in overcast conditions.
