Whenever Pakistan’s cricket team performs well, the joy is not confined to cricket ground; it spreads across the country. Victories bring smiles to millions of faces and give the nation something to celebrate together. The same spirit was visible when Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by three wickets in final of the ODI tri-series at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, to lift the trophy. It was indeed a wonderful performance, the likes of which cricket fans had been waiting to see for quite some time.
What made this victory particularly satisfying was the team’s overall performance. Except for one match against Sri Lanka, in which team was bundled out for a modest total, Pakistan remained impressive throughout the tournament. The batting, bowling and fielding showed considerable improvement. Chasing a challenging target of 326 in the final was no easy task yet players displayed determination and composure when it mattered most. The performance of younger players such as Arafat Minhas, Saad and Hasan Nawaz demonstrated that Pakistan has promising talent waiting for opportunities. Their ability to deliver under pressure speaks volumes about their potential and temperament. Such performances should encourage the PCB to invest greater confidence in emerging cricketers. With roughly a year remaining before the next ODI World Cup, the PCB must begin its preparations without delay. Building a competitive side requires consistency, careful planning and above all, continuity. Young and talented players should be given sufficient opportunities to establish themselves at international level rather than being included for a match or two and then dropped. The team management must also identify areas requiring improvement and work on combinations that can serve Pakistan well in coming years. A single tournament victory does not guarantee future success, but certainly provides confidence and a foundation to build upon. We hope national team maintains this momentum and continues to produce spirited performances in all tournaments.
