A growing partnership

The enhanced engagement between Pakistan and Malaysia at different levels, in recent times is really encouraging and offers an opportunity to take relations between two fraternal countries to a higher level. The growing interaction reflects mutual interest in strengthening bilateral ties and expanding cooperation in areas of common concern.

The visit of Malaysian Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and his meetings with Pakistani leadership, including Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, are particularly significant. The two sides agreed to establish a joint working group between their interior ministries to promote institutional cooperation, with counter-terrorism, counter-narcotics, cybercrime and prevention of illegal immigration among the key areas of focus. Cooperation between coast guards, training programmes and greater interaction between National Police Academy of Pakistan and Royal Malaysia Police College were also discussed. These are important areas of cooperation, particularly at a time when security challenges are increasingly transnational. Regular institutional exchanges, sharing of expertise and capacity-building can help both countries strengthen their ability to deal with emerging threats. Cooperation can also be expanded to other areas, including trade and investment, tourism, education, technology and people-to-people contacts.

Malaysia has, in recent years, also emerged as an important destination for our workforce and young people seeking higher education. This provides another avenue for strengthening bilateral relations. We should therefore engage with Malaysian friends on facilitating greater employment opportunities for Pakistani workers and increasing the existing work quota. A larger quota, coupled with transparent and efficient recruitment mechanisms, could create valuable opportunities for our youth while meeting Malaysia’s workforce requirements. Similarly, greater cooperation in education, including scholarships, university linkages, skills development and vocational training should be encouraged. Stronger institutional cooperation, greater economic interaction and increased opportunities for our workers and students can give bilateral relations a practical and mutually beneficial dimension, taking friendship between Pakistan and Malaysia to a new level.
