Islamabad is reportedly exploring a path towards the resumption of stalled US-Iran negotiations following a diplomatic push by China. These efforts come at a critical time as the conflict enters a dangerous phase, with continued military exchanges and rising tensions threatening to widen the scope of confrontation.
China can indeed play an important role in strengthening the diplomatic efforts. Beijing has already supported mediation initiatives by Pakistan and other parties and has a direct interest in the restoration of regional stability. The security of key maritime routes, including the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea corridor, is vital for international trade and energy supplies. Recent tensions involving the Houthis and their threats to regional maritime security, particularly in relation to Saudi Arabia, demonstrate how quickly instability can spread and disrupt vital economic routes. Any prolonged confrontation would have serious economic and security consequences far beyond the immediate region. The continuation of hostilities is in nobody’s interest. An expanded military confrontation risks drawing in additional actors and transforming the current crisis into a broader regional conflict. Hence, better sense must prevail. All parties must recognize that restraint, dialogue and compromise provide the only realistic path towards lasting peace and stability. The immediate priority must be to bring an end to both military hostilities and the cycle of inflammatory rhetoric. A negotiated solution remains the only sustainable way to safeguard regional and global security.
