Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has named the first black and South Asian American woman, Senator Kamala Harris as his Vice-Presidential nominee. The nomination of the California senator of Indian-Jamaican heritage have raised many fears among American Pakistanis.
Joe Biden will face President Donald Trump in the election on 3 November. Kamala Harris will debate Trump’s running mate, Vice-President Mike Pence, on 7 October in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Biden announced his decision in a tweet and said that he had “the great honour” to name Ms Harris as his number two and described her as one of the country’s finest public servants.
Kamala Harris later tweeted that Biden “can unify the American people because he’s spent his life fighting for us. And as president, he’ll build an America that lives up to our ideals.
“I’m honored to join him as our party’s nominee for Vice President, and do what it takes to make him our Commander-in-Chief.
Mr Biden promised in March to name a woman on the ticket. Ms Harris, 55, failed in her bid to win the Democratic nomination in December last year. She was born in Oakland, to two immigrant parents: an Indian-born mother and Jamaican-born father.
Pakistani community in the united states have expressed mixed feeling over this nomination, some consider kamala ‘s Indian connection as potential threat to Pakistan interests while other are optimistic due to her long struggle against ethnicity and bridging the race and colour gaps in American society. Some Pakistani American fear that India can increase its influence in Unites States power corridors in case democrat candidate win the presidential election.
The good news is that Kamala opposed Indian act of revoking article 370 and crippling Jammu and Kashmir special status and no one need to fear, this was stated by Tahir Javed, Joe Biden campaign head for South Asia. He told that Kamala’s mother was Indian but she was raised in the United States and her nomination is due to her struggle against racism and ethnicity, how can she support such acts in Indian occupied territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistani and Muslim leaders in America have announced to meet kamala and share their reservations over Pakistan policy and Kashmir issue.
Chairman Pakistan American Association Chaudhary Aslam expressed his disappointment over the nomination and said they were supporting Joe Biden for a just world but this nomination can create problems for Pakistan and Kashmiris.
