US Midterm Elections 2026: Complete State-Wise, House, Senate Results

Us Midterm Elections 2026 Complete State Wise House Senate Results

WASHINGTON – US witnessed major political realignment in midterm elections, with Democrats winning control of both the House of Representatives and Senate, ending Republican dominance of Congress and creating a major challenge for President Donald Trump.

Democratic Party’s sweeping gains across competitive congressional districts, including several traditionally Republican strongholds, have reshaped the balance of power in Washington. While vote counting continued into November 4, election projections confirmed that Democrats secured minimum seats required to control the House.

US Midterm Elections 2026: National Results

The 2026 elections involved all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 Senate seats. Americans also voted in gubernatorial races and numerous state and local contests.

Both chambers were controlled by Republicans before the election. Democrats’ victories mean the president will face opposition-party majorities in Congress during the final two years of his presidency.

State-by-State US House Results

The national Democratic advance was not confined to traditionally liberal states. Some of the party’s most significant successes came in districts previously represented by Republicans.

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania featured prominently in the Democratic campaign to regain House control. Several closely fought districts reported Democratic victories or leads against incumbent Republican lawmakers.

District Democrat Republican Reported result
PA-1 Harvie Brian Fitzpatrick Democrat 52.7%, Republican 47.3%
PA-8 Democratic candidate Republican incumbent Democratic flip reported
PA-10 Janelle Stelson Scott Perry Democrat leading 55% to 45%
Other competitive race Paige Cognetti Rob Bresnahan Democrat leading 54.4% to 45.6%

Republican Ryan Mackenzie was also reported to have lost his reelection bid. Pennsylvania’s results illustrated how suburban districts and competitive constituencies contributed to the overall change in congressional control.

Texas Breakthrough

Texas emerged as one of the most consequential states in the congressional battle. Democratic candidate Bobby Pulido defeated Republican Monica De La Cruz in the 15th Congressional District, while Katy Padilla Stout captured the 23rd District.

Democratic Representative Henry Cuellar was also reported to be leading his Republican challenger by a wide margin in an early count.

District Democratic candidate Reported outcome
TX-15 Bobby Pulido Defeated Monica De La Cruz
TX-23 Katy Padilla Stout Flipped Republican-held seat
Cuellar’s district Henry Cuellar Led 65.8% to 29.6%

The results were particularly important because Republicans had previously viewed parts of Texas as reliable electoral territory.

Iowa

Iowa delivered one of the most striking Democratic performances, with the party reportedly flipping three of the state’s four House seats.

District Democratic winner Republican opponent
IA-1 Christina Bohannan Mariannette Miller-Meeks
IA-2 Lindsay James Joe Mitchell
IA-3 Sarah Trone Garriott Zach Nunn

North Carolina

Democrat Jamie Ager was reported to have won North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District, delivering the party’s first victory there since 2010. The outcome was especially significant because the district had long been regarded as favorable territory for Republicans.

Redistricting and changing voter preferences were among the factors shaping the state’s congressional contests.

Wisconsin

Wisconsin also contributed to the Republican losses, with Democrats reportedly flipping two previously Republican-held House seats. These gains reinforced the party’s position across the Midwest and added to its overall national majority.

Other Important House Races Across the United States

Outside the biggest battleground states, Democrats also reported victories or promising leads in several smaller congressional districts.

State District Democratic candidate Election-night status
Alabama AL-2 Shomari Figures Reelected
Arizona AZ-1 Shah Leading with 52.6%
Arizona AZ-6 Mendoza Leading with 53%
California CA-1 Mike McGuire Reported victory
California CA-22 Villegas Leading with 66.4%
Colorado CO-8 Manny Rutinel Leading with 55.5%
Florida — Jared Moskowitz Leading with 51.3%
Indiana IN-5 J.D. Ford Democratic flip reported
Kentucky KY-6 Zach Dembo Democratic flip reported
Maine ME-2 Dunlap Leading with 50.1%
Michigan MI-4 McCann Leading in partial count
Missouri MO-2 Fred Wellman Democratic flip reported
Nebraska NE-2 Denise Powell Democratic victory reported
New Jersey NJ-7 Democratic challenger Republican incumbent defeated
Ohio OH-1 Greg Landsman Reelected

In New Jersey, Republican Representative Tom Kean was reported to have lost his seat, while Democrats also made gains in congressional districts affected by revised electoral boundaries.

Senate Elections 2026

Senate outcome was another major development in the midterms. Democrats captured at least seven Republican-held seats, securing a majority in the 100-member chamber.

State Democratic candidate Polling count
Texas James Talarico Republican-held seat flipped
North Carolina Roy Cooper Democratic gain
Ohio Sherrod Brown Returned to the Senate
South Carolina Annie Andrews Democratic breakthrough
Kansas Adam Hamilton Republican-held seat flipped
Iowa Democratic candidate Republican-held seat flipped
Maine Troy Jackson Republican-held seat flipped

Michigan also elected Democrat Abdul El-Sayed to the Senate, retaining the seat for the party. Senate result is particularly consequential because the chamber has the authority to confirm federal judicial appointments and senior administration nominees.

With Democrats taking control, the Trump administration could face greater difficulty securing approval for controversial appointments.

Governors’ Elections

Alongside Congress, gubernatorial races revealed another important shift in the political map. Democrats gained Republican-held governorships and consolidated their position in several battleground states.

Among the reported outcomes were victories by Gina Hinojosa in Texas, Keisha Lance Bottoms in Georgia and Amy Acton in Ohio. Democrats also recorded gains in Iowa. These victories matter beyond party control. Governors oversee important state policies, budgets and administrative decisions and may play significant roles in future redistricting processes.

Several issues appear to have shaped voting behavior, although their relative importance differed across states. Economic pressures and living costs, Household finances remained central to the election. Concerns about prices, purchasing power and broader economic uncertainty influenced voter attitudes toward the governing party.

The war involving Iran became an important political issue, with debate over the administration’s handling of international tensions and the economic consequences of the conflict. Questions surrounding the administration’s conduct and federal decision-making helped mobilize opposition voters.

Democratic takeover could substantially change how Washington operates after the newly elected Congress convenes on January 3, 2027.

Control of both chambers gives Democrats substantial legislative and oversight powers, but it does not mean they can independently implement their entire political program. Trump retains the presidency and the constitutional authority to veto legislation.

Overriding a presidential veto generally requires a two-thirds majority in both chambers, considerably more than an ordinary congressional majority. As a result, the next two years could involve prolonged negotiations, heightened political confrontation and legislative deadlock.
