ISLAMABAD – Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik raised hopes of further relief at the pumps, saying the public can expect good news on petrol and diesel prices today.
Addressing a press conference alongside Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Malik acknowledged the financial strain facing households and indicated that a reduction in fuel prices was on the cards.
His remarks followed Monday’s announcement of a refinery-backed arrangement aimed at providing around Rs15-per-litre relief on petrol. Malik said local refineries had agreed to absorb additional costs, helping the government avert an anticipated increase and keep petrol cheaper than international market-linked costs would otherwise require.
The arrangement would place an estimated monthly burden of Rs15 billion on refineries. The Rs15 figure referred specifically to relief on petrol, rather than a confirmed reduction of that amount in both petrol and diesel prices.
Petrol currently costs Rs374.51 per litre, following a Rs3.40 reduction from Rs377.91. High-speed diesel is priced at Rs395.20 per litre, down Rs7.76 from Rs402.96. These rates took effect on November 3.
Malik did not specify about further reduction or when new rates would take effect. Further details are awaited.
