THE attack on civilians in Angoor Adda, South Waziristan, from Afghan side is yet another disturbing reminder of the threat posed by cross-border terrorism and aggression. The mortar shelling that martyred one civilian, injured five members of the same family and damaged local shops is utterly condemnable. Targeting civilian populations is unacceptable under any circumstances and those responsible must understand that Pakistan will not remain indifferent to attacks on its people.
This is not the first such incident. In late April, mortar shelling from across the border injured civilians and damaged homes in South Waziristan, prompting Pakistani forces to target Afghan Taliban positions. The recurrence of such incidents raises serious questions about the intentions and responsibilities of the Afghan Taliban authorities. Instead of taking action against terrorist groups operating from Afghan territory, the Afghan Taliban are acting alongside elements that threaten Pakistan’s security. Pakistan has repeatedly made it clear that its sovereignty and territorial integrity are non-negotiable. The response of Pakistani security forces to the latest attack was justified and necessary to protect civilians and deter further aggression.
The country’s armed forces possess the capability, professionalism and determination to defend the homeland and deliver a forceful response to any hostile action. Those who test Pakistan’s resolve should have no illusions about its ability to defend itself. The timing of the attack on civilians in Angoor Adda also invites scrutiny. With resistance to the Afghan Taliban regime growing over its oppressive policies, such actions reflect a leadership increasingly struggling with its internal challenges. Rather than addressing public grievances and restoring confidence among its own people, the regime risks aggravating regional tensions through a confrontational approach towards its neighbours. This conduct poses a serious threat to regional peace and stability. The Afghan Taliban must put their house in order. Their foremost responsibility is to improve the lives of Afghans, address their hardships and prevent their territory from being used for terrorism. Supporting or facilitating militant violence will bring neither stability to Afghanistan nor peace to the region.
