The true progress of any nation depends on the education, training and empowerment of its younger generation. Prime Minister of Pakistan Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif is optimistic about the future of the country’s youth and firmly believes that if talented and hardworking students are provided with adequate opportunities, modern facilities and proper guidance, they can lead Pakistan towards new heights of progress. In line with this vision, the initiative to provide Chromebooks and Wi-Fi connectivity to deserving and talented students of government schools and religious seminaries is a significant and commendable step.
The Prime Minister’s laptop scheme has been providing modern educational devices to deserving students of public-sector educational institutions for several years. Extending this initiative through the provision of Chromebooks and internet connectivity reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that talented students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds are not deprived of the opportunities offered by modern education.
During his tenure as Chief Minister of Punjab, Shehbaz Sharif introduced the concept of Daanish Schools specifically to provide quality education to talented children from underprivileged families. He not only presented this visionary idea but also established Daanish Schools across Punjab, offering deserving students a completely free education comparable to the standards of the country’s leading schools. After becoming Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif expanded the scope of the Daanish Schools initiative to other parts of the country.
At present, dozens of Daanish Schools are under construction across all four provinces, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Meanwhile, construction of Daanish University in Islamabad is underway, extending this vision towards higher education and creating further opportunities for talented young people to pursue their academic ambitions.
Imagine the lives of children whose parents work tirelessly to meet household expenses, pay for education and healthcare, and fulfil other basic needs on limited incomes. For such families, even five hundred rupees can make a considerable difference. Purchasing a modern educational device worth thousands of rupees is not merely difficult for them; in many cases, it is simply beyond their means. In contrast, children from affluent families have easy access to the latest devices and internet facilities. This disparity is not just about financial resources; it is also about unequal opportunities that play a decisive role in shaping children’s futures.
Those who grow up in comfortable circumstances may not fully appreciate how valuable a book, an educational device or internet access can be for a child in need. The real significance of these facilities is best understood by children who continue to dream big, work hard and remain determined to succeed despite limited resources. The Prime Minister’s initiative is a positive effort to reduce such deprivation and enable these children to demonstrate their true potential.
One of the most encouraging aspects of this programme is the inclusion of talented students from religious seminaries. A significant number of these institutions operate through public donations, zakat and charitable contributions. Many students enrolled in them belong to families that cannot afford the expenses associated with modern educational facilities. Providing these students with access to digital technology recognises an important reality: intelligence, ability and the desire to succeed are not the exclusive preserve of any particular social class or educational institution.
Students pursuing religious education can also enhance their capabilities by benefiting from modern knowledge, research and technology. Access to contemporary educational facilities can help them complement their religious studies with an understanding of modern-day requirements and expand their opportunities to play a more effective role in society. By extending this initiative to students of both government schools and religious seminaries, the government is sending a message of inclusion and equal importance, which is essential for building a balanced and comprehensive educational system.
The provision of five hundred thousand Chromebooks, along with five hundred thousand MiFi internet devices, is another noteworthy feature of this scheme. According to the government’s announcement, each MiFi connection will be capable of serving up to five people, meaning that approximately 2.5 million children and other individuals could benefit from the programme. In this way, a facility provided to an individual student can become a source of educational advancement for an entire household. However, the programme can achieve its true potential only if the distribution of devices is accompanied by reliable internet connectivity, appropriate guidance and effective monitoring.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s initiative reflects a broader vision that a child’s future should not be determined by the financial circumstances of their parents. The government’s responsibility is not limited to establishing educational institutions; it also extends to removing the barriers that prevent talented children from progressing. Selecting deserving students on the basis of merit and transparency, ensuring the timely distribution of devices and promoting their effective use for educational purposes can further strengthen the impact of this scheme.
Pakistan’s path to progress lies in educating and empowering its youth. If a child from an underprivileged family gains access to modern technology today, that same child may become a successful doctor, engineer, teacher, researcher or entrepreneur tomorrow, contributing meaningfully to the country’s development. These five hundred thousand Chromebooks represent an effort to give new momentum to the aspirations of five hundred thousand students, while the hopes associated with them could brighten the future of millions of family members.
The need of the hour is to ensure that this programme does not remain a one-time exercise in distributing devices but becomes part of a sustained national policy to promote digital education and educational equality. The Prime Minister’s vision of creating better opportunities for young people, particularly talented students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds, will yield lasting results if initiatives such as Chromebooks, Wi-Fi connectivity, the laptop scheme, Daanish Schools and Daanish University are pursued in a coordinated and integrated manner.
Nations grow stronger when they place their trust in underprivileged yet talented children and provide them with the resources they need to move forward. By investing in these young minds, Pakistan can lay the foundation for a more educated, technologically empowered and prosperous future.
