Trade resumption

The reopening of Gabd-Rimdan border crossing between Pakistan and Iran is a welcome development, bringing relief to traders, transporters and consumers affected by the week-long suspension of cross-border trade. Although the reasons behind the closure remain unclear, its economic consequences were evident, with trucks carrying essential commodities stranded on both sides and concerns growing over shortage of key supplies.

The movement of trucks carrying LPG and food commodities is expected to ease supply constraints and provide some relief to consumers. Uninterrupted cross-border trade can also reduce losses for traders and transporters, whose livelihoods depend on the timely movement of goods. However, the attack on freight vehicles near the crossing has highlighted serious security concerns that cannot be overlooked. Necessary measures must be taken to ensure the safety of traders, transporters and their vehicles. Improved security arrangements, regular patrolling and effective coordination between the relevant authorities on both sides of the border are essential to prevent such incidents. Commercial activity cannot flourish if those involved in legitimate trade remain exposed to security threats. Ensuring safe passage for goods and transporters should, therefore, be a priority alongside the restoration of trade. Pakistan and Iran have drawn closer in recent times through increased engagement at various levels. Pakistan’s diplomatic and mediation efforts have also helped strengthen mutual understanding and create opportunities for closer cooperation. This positive momentum should be sustained and translated into practical gains for both countries. The two neighbours have considerable potential to expand cooperation in trade, energy, agriculture, transportation and border management. Improved connectivity and streamlined customs procedures could open new markets and create economic opportunities.
