Railways emergency

An emergency has been declared in Pakistan Railways until December 31 in response to repeated train accidents and derailments that have claimed precious lives and injured several passengers. The decision reflects the urgency of addressing the persistent problems that have undermined the safety, efficiency and reliability of the railway system.

Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi has directed officers and officials to work on an emergency basis to remove operational deficiencies, adding that all faulty passenger coaches and goods wagons should be taken out of service and made fit for operations by the end of December. These measures show the seriousness with which the Minister intends to address the longstanding issues of Pakistan Railways. Faulty coaches and wagons have been identified among the major factors contributing to accidents and derailments. Their timely repair, along with improvement in locomotives, braking systems and signalling, can certainly help reduce risks and make train journeys safer. The availability of spare parts and the use of local workshops to manufacture essential components are also positive steps towards strengthening maintenance capacity. However, repairing defective rolling stock alone will not be enough to resolve the challenges facing the railway network. The condition of railway tracks remains a major concern, making the immediate commencement of the long-delayed Main Line-1 (ML-1) upgradation project equally important. Upgrading the track would not only help reduce the risk of accidents but also allow trains to operate at higher speeds, shorten travel times and improve the overall passenger experience. A safer, faster and more dependable railway system could attract more passengers, ease pressure on roads and provide an economical means of transporting goods across the country.

We are confident that the current minister will take the necessary steps to move the project forward and ensure that its implementation begins without further delay and is completed within the stipulated timeframe.
