Exhibition highlights young brides, plight affected by floods
Alliance Française Islamabad, in collaboration with the Embassy of France in Pakistan and UNICEF, organised a photography exhibition titled “The Too-Young Monsoon Wives” by French photographer Isabeau de Rouffignac, highlighting the lives of young brides whose futures have been reshaped by devastating floods.
The exhibition, scheduled from October 20 to 26, 2026, at Alliance Française Islamabad, F-7/4, brings attention to the intersection of climate change, child marriage, gender inequality and the vulnerabilities faced by young girls in flood-affected communities.
Through a series of portraits, the exhibition documents the experiences of young brides whose lives have been profoundly affected by climate-induced disasters. The photographs invite viewers to reflect on how floods and the loss of homes, livelihoods and economic security can intensify existing social challenges, particularly for girls in vulnerable communities. The exhibition also draws attention to the wider consequences of climate-related displacement and economic hardship for women and girls. In communities already facing poverty and limited access to education and opportunities, environmental disasters can deepen inequalities and increase pressure on families, leaving young girls particularly exposed to harmful social practices, including early marriage.
By bringing these stories into the public sphere through photography, the initiative seeks to encourage dialogue on the protection of children, the empowerment of girls and the need for a more inclusive response to climate change. It underscores the importance of addressing not only the immediate effects of natural disasters but also their long-term social consequences.
The collaboration between the Embassy of France, Alliance Française Islamabad and UNICEF provides an opportunity to engage audiences through visual storytelling and raise awareness of the challenges confronting vulnerable children and families in Pakistan. The exhibition opened on October 20 at 5:30pm and remained accessible to visitors from 10am to 5pm during the exhibition period. Through its powerful imagery and human-centred narrative, “The Too-Young Monsoon Wives” seeks to place the experiences of young brides at the centre of discussions on climate vulnerability, child protection.
