KARACHI – Karachi is facing prolonged scheduled and unscheduled power outages, with electricity supply disruptions lasting more than 16 hours in some areas as K-Electric cites interruptions in liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies as a major factor affecting power generation.
The residents of several neighbourhoods have reported extended electricity cuts, with Lyari, Malir, Landhi and Korangi among the areas experiencing significant disruptions.
Complaints have also emerged from Orangi Town, Surjani Town, Quaidabad, Lines Area, New Karachi and Musa Colony. Residents of parts of Mauripur Road, Machar Colony and Hawksbay have also reported interruptions in electricity supply.
The prolonged outages have caused considerable difficulties for residents, with electricity remaining unavailable for several hours in different parts of the city.
Consumers have complained that even those who pay their electricity bills regularly are being affected by load-shedding. K-Electric, however, maintains that power cuts are implemented in areas where electricity theft and non-payment of bills remain significant issues.
In a statement shared on its Facebook page, the power utility said disruptions in international supplies and delays in cargo shipments had affected the availability of regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) across Pakistan.
The company said the shortage was affecting electricity generation nationwide, including at K-Electric’s power plants.
According to K-Electric management, the company may have to resort to load management during evening and nighttime peak-demand hours as a last option if the situation makes it unavoidable.
The utility said electricity supply was expected to remain stable during daytime hours, while any additional load management would depend on the prevailing supply conditions.
The ongoing situation has added to concerns among Karachi residents already struggling with lengthy power outages and the resulting disruption to their daily routines.
