Missile Strike Hits Jeddah As Satellite Imagery Signals Fresh Attacks In Saudi Arabia

RIYADH/JEDDAH — New reports of possible missile strike near Saudi Arabia’s strategic port city of Jeddah sparked alarm after satellite heat shows changes but the alleged attack remains unverified so far by officials.

Saudi Arabia is facing security concerns after reported attacks on Riyadh’s Airport which left three Saudi nationals dead, damaged airport facilities and disrupted flights, while fresh social media claims of a possible missile strike near the Red Sea city of Jeddah have raised questions about the widening threat to the kingdom.

A day after Riyadh attacks, new reports surfaced online, pointing to possible fire activity near Jeddah, with social media users citing satellite-based heat detections as potential evidence of an attack launched from Yemen. However, the two developments have different levels of verification: reports of the Riyadh airport attacks include statements attributed to Saudi aviation authorities, while the latest Jeddah allegation remains unconfirmed.

Yemen’s Houthi movement claimed responsibility for targeting King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh with a ballistic missile on Thursday, October 8. Military spokesperson Yahya Saree also referred in some statements to additional cruise missiles and claimed the operation had disrupted air traffic.

Saudi-led coalition reported intercepting two ballistic missiles directed towards Riyadh and another aimed at Khamis Mushait. Explosions were reported in the Saudi capital as concerns over further attacks intensified.

On October 9, reports citing Saudi aviation authorities said attacks the previous day had targeted airport facilities and a Saudia Airlines aircraft. Three Saudi nationals were reportedly killed, including Saudia captain Hamoud Ali Alkalthami, while several other Saudi citizens and residents of different nationalities sustained injuries.

The incident also reportedly damaged a parked Saudia aircraft after shrapnel or fire affected the plane. Related accounts indicated that no passengers were aboard at the time.

The consequences extended beyond the airport. Debris from an intercepted missile reportedly damaged a kindergarten and a medical clinic complex, highlighting the potential danger to civilian infrastructure even when incoming missiles are intercepted.

Flight chaos

The reported attacks disrupted operations at Riyadh airport, with numerous flight cancellations and delays affecting scheduled departures. Some reports suggested that nearly half of planned departures were affected.

Saudi aviation authorities reportedly said on October 9 that air traffic had returned to normal, with services gradually resuming.

The latest incident was part of a broader series of reported attacks against Saudi targets during the week. Earlier incidents involving Riyadh and Abha airports were also linked to fatalities and dozens of injuries, although figures varied across reports.

Houthis also claimed attacks against other locations, including Najran airport and Khamis Mushait air base. Saudi-led coalition forces, meanwhile, reported intercepting incoming missiles and destroying Houthi missile-launch platforms in response. Airlines faced operational challenges amid concerns over further attacks, while warnings concerning Saudi airspace added to uncertainty surrounding regional travel.

The latest reports follow separate allegations circulated earlier this week, when sources claimed that ballistic missiles had hit an Aramco facility or refinery in Jeddah, causing fires.

Reports of previous Houthi-related threats and Saudi interceptions involving western parts of the kingdom, including areas around Jeddah, Yanbu and Taif, form part of the wider security backdrop. Saudi forces have reported intercepting missiles and drones in various incidents, while claims of successful strikes and the extent of damage have not always been independently established.
