Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif expressed solidarity with the victims of the October 8, 2005 earthquake and paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the devastating tragedy.
In her special message on the 21st National Day of Resilience, observed in connection with the October 8, 2005 earthquake, the chief minister said that people still felt deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the catastrophic earthquake. She said the Pakistani nation’s spirit of compassion, sacrifice and empathy during that hour of calamity remained unforgettable. “Effective policies and sustainable measures are essential to cope with floods, earthquakes and smog caused by climate change,” she said.
The chief minister said the unity, solidarity, steadfastness and courage demonstrated by the people during earthquakes and floods represented a proud national character. She appreciated the Pakistan Army, Navy, Air Force, Rescue 1122, police and other relevant institutions for their services during rescue and relief operations.
“All institutions must remain prepared at all times to deal with natural disasters. Timely preparedness can save human lives and property and protect the environment from devastating damage,” she said.
Maryam Nawaz said Punjab had faced the largest flood in its history and conducted the biggest rescue, relief and evacuation operation.
