Leghari stresses Pakistan-Russia ties, warns over water rights

ISLAMABAD – Federal Minister for Energy Awais Leghari has stressed the importance of Pakistan’s growing bilateral relations with Russia, saying enhanced cooperation in energy, agriculture, trade and the North-South Transport Corridor could contribute to regional stability and economic growth.

Speaking about Pakistan-Russia relations, the minister said Islamabad attaches significant importance to expanding cooperation with Moscow across multiple sectors.

Leghari also highlighted the importance of transboundary water agreements, particularly the Indus Waters Treaty, in safeguarding Pakistan’s water rights.

He warned that any unilateral attempt to deprive Pakistan of its lawful share of water under the treaty would be treated as equivalent to a declaration of war.

The minister stressed that disputes relating to water rights must be addressed strictly through established legal and treaty-based mechanisms.

He said Pakistan remained committed to protecting its water interests while pursuing regional cooperation and economic engagement with other countries.
