KABUL – Fresh diplomatic tensions erupted between Pakistan and Afghanistan, with Kabul summoning Pakistan’s chargé d’affaires over alleged cross-border infiltration, even as Islamabad continues to accuse the Taliban government of providing safe haven to TTP militants.
Afghanistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Pakistani diplomat was summoned on Tuesday and presented with a protest note concerning the alleged cross-border movement. The development follows reports of clashes in recent days between Taliban government forces and armed opposition groups in Nuristan and Kunar, two Afghan provinces bordering Pakistan.
Afghan authorities have alleged that the armed groups crossed the Durand Line, the de facto border between Pakistan and Afghanistan, and claimed that they had received support from Pakistan.
Pakistan-Afghanistan tensions are once again boiling over, with TTP safe-haven dispute at the heart of the confrontation. Pakistan accuses the Taliban government of allowing the militant group to operate from Afghan soil, while Kabul rejects the allegations.
UN Security Council-mandated report has also said Taliban authorities continued supporting the TTP, linking this to an escalation in attacks against Pakistan.
