British police arrested five men near RAF Fairford in western England on Sunday on suspicion of terrorism and explosives-related offences.
According to media reports, action was taken after three suspicious vans were reported moving towards the military base.
Armed officers detained the suspects, while bomb disposal teams examined the vehicles. Police imposed a 400-metre cordon and evacuated around 85 nearby homes as a precaution.
RAF Fairford hosts US Air Force personnel and has been used to support US strikes against Iranian targets. Security was also reportedly increased at other US-linked military bases in Britain.
Counter Terrorism Policing said the investigation was in its early stages and the five men remained in custody. Authorities have not disclosed their identities or the suspected motive.
The US Air Force said it remained vigilant and would take appropriate measures to protect its personnel and installations.
