WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump has rejected Iran’s proposal for a seven-day ceasefire, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.
The newspaper reported that Trump told his advisers that the United States could resume bombing Iran after the November midterm elections. However, US officials cited in the report said the president’s position could change, while the potential nature and intensity of any renewed attacks remain unclear.
According to the report, Trump does not believe that Tehran will accept US demands.
Iran’s proposal reportedly included an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume nuclear negotiations in exchange for the United States ending its blockade of Iranian ports.
Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had outlined a plan to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz while briefing journalists in New York.
Araghchi said the plan included implementation of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
The Iranian foreign minister said Tehran was prepared to implement the plan to end the war, provided the United States also carried out its part of the proposed arrangements.
