ISLAMABAD — The federal capital has been placed under Section 144, with authorities banning all forms of gatherings as security measures intensify ahead of September 27.
The Islamabad district administration has imposed Section 144 across the city, prohibiting public assemblies, gatherings and other such activities. Restrictions on gatherings are also in place under the Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Act, 2024.
The administration has warned that violations will trigger strict legal action, while a breach of the relevant law can carry a prison sentence of up to three years.
Citizens have been urged to stay away from illegal activities, follow official directions and cooperate with security agencies during the period of heightened security.
Traffic Update
The Section 144 order comes as the movement of traffic around Islamabad and the surrounding areas faces increasing restrictions.
A commuter reported late Wednesday night that the M1 had been closed from the Islamabad Toll Plaza, while the Fateh Jang and Tarnol interchanges were reportedly closed in both directions.
Travellers heading towards Fateh Jang were forced to use alternative routes, including Airport Road, Mumtaz City and Khudadad City, before connecting to Fateh Jang Road.
At Chenab Bridge, one side has also reportedly been closed, with the remaining side being used to carry traffic in both directions.

Motorways Remain Open But With Restrictions
While the Twin Cities’ roads are currently open, the motorway situation remains fluid, with closures and restrictions being introduced according to security requirements.
The M1 is expected to face complete closure, while the M2 will be closed to heavy transport vehicles after 11pm under instructions attributed to Islamabad Police.
Light transport vehicles can continue using the M2 until further orders.

GT Road
With motorway routes becoming increasingly restricted, traffic is expected to shift towards alternative roads. GT Road could see a sharp rise in traffic as commuters attempt to avoid closed routes and reach their destinations before further restrictions take effect.
Travellers have consequently been advised to check the latest road situation before beginning their journeys.
Mobile and Internet Services
The restrictions are not limited to roads. The Punjab government has reportedly requested a downgrade in mobile phone and internet services from September 27, adding another layer to the security measures being considered for the protest period.

Bus Terminals May Also Close
Transport services are also bracing for disruption. According to some transport service providers, bus terminals in Islamabad and Rawalpindi could close at any time after 8pm amid the changing road situation.
The possible closures come as motorway restrictions threaten to disrupt intercity travel and force passengers to alter their plans.
Meanwhile, social media has been flooded with claims that a local holiday has been announced in the Twin Cities. There has been no official announcement of such a holiday so far, and messages circulating online have been described as fake.
Authorities have urged citizens to rely on official notifications instead of forwarding unverified messages.
