ISLAMABAD/RAWALPINDI – A rapidly evolving security situation ahead of September 27 is beginning to disrupt travel, education and communications across the Islamabad-Rawalpindi region, with authorities tightening restrictions and transport operators preparing for possible closures.
Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province from September 23 to October 5, restricting public gatherings and processions. The move comes amid heightened security concerns and preparations for a planned protest in Islamabad.
The disruption is also moving into the education sector. HITEC University Taxila and COMSATS campuses in Wah and Attock have announced that classes will move online from Thursday, September 24, until further notice.
PMAS Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi has also announced online classes from tomorrow.
However, there has been no blanket announcement placing all universities in Islamabad and Rawalpindi online. Students have been advised to follow notices issued by their own institutions.
MOTORWAYS Update
Travel plans are already being affected. M-1 Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway is scheduled to close to all traffic from 11pm tonight until further orders, according to Islamabad Traffic Police. Motorists have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel towards the M-1.
Authorities decided to close the M-1, M-14 and sections of GT Road at Attock Khurd indefinitely, with the closures taking effect from Wednesday evening.
The situation has prompted concerns over increased pressure on alternative routes, particularly GT Road, as commuters attempt to reach their destinations before restrictions intensify.
BUS SERVICES
Transport operators are reportedly already responding to the developing situation, with some intercity bus services cancelling tickets scheduled from Wednesday evening.
Several transport providers have also indicated that bus terminals in the Twin Cities could close after 8pm, although travellers should confirm directly with their respective operators before heading to terminals.
Another major concern is telecommunications. Punjab authorities have reportedly approached the federal government seeking downgrading or suspension of mobile and internet services in sensitive areas, particularly around Rawalpindi and Attock, as security preparations intensify.
Reports indicate that connectivity restrictions could affect areas around September 26–27, but the precise scope and implementation remain subject to official decisions.
Authorities are also preparing for possible movement towards the capital, with security arrangements reportedly including containers at major entry points and additional personnel in Islamabad and surrounding districts.
In Attock, security has been significantly reinforced around key crossings and routes linking KP, Punjab and the Twin Cities.
Despite messages circulating on social media, there is currently no confirmed general local holiday announcement for Islamabad or Rawalpindi. Citizens should therefore treat viral holiday messages as unverified unless confirmed by the relevant government authority.
For now, the picture remains fluid: motorways face closures, transport services are adjusting schedules, several universities are shifting online, security restrictions are expanding and possible connectivity disruptions are under consideration.
