Two policemen deployed to protect a polio vaccination team were martyred after unidentified armed men opened fire in Nushki district of Balochistan on Tuesday, police said.
The deceased officials were identified as Yasir Ahmed and Abdul Rauf. Following the attack, the assailants also took away the weapons belonging to the two policemen, police said.
Polio vaccination teams have frequently come under attack in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where militants and other hostile elements have sought to disrupt immunisation campaigns.
In May, two policemen were killed in separate attacks on teams involved in the anti-polio drive in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bajaur district.
The latest incident occurred as Pakistan’s nationwide polio vaccination campaign, which began on September 21, is underway until September 27. Officials aim to administer polio drops to approximately 31 million children during the campaign.
