KARACHI – A 57-year-old suspected car lifter has been arrested in Karachi after police used CCTV footage to trace him in connection with vehicle thefts, according to the Anti-Vehicle Lifting Cell (AVLC).
The suspect, identified as Insaf Ali, is originally from Ghotki in Sindh and allegedly began committing car thefts in 2005. According to the AVLC, 14 cases have been registered against him.
In a video statement, the arrested suspect said he was 57 years old and had started committing offences in 2005.
Police said the suspect would allegedly arrive at mosques around Fajr prayers and steal vehicles parked outside before transferring them out of Karachi before daylight.
According to investigators, the stolen vehicles were taken to Quetta for sale. The suspect allegedly travelled from Ghotki to Karachi specifically to steal vehicles and returned after carrying out the thefts.
Police have also obtained the record of a person allegedly involved in purchasing and selling stolen vehicles in Quetta. Investigators have tightened the net around other individuals whose names emerged during questioning.
Meanwhile, the AVLC has claimed that it recovered more than 700 stolen vehicles across the country during the current year.
