THE Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has said that it shot down a Houthi drone near Mecca, Islam’s holiest city, on Tuesday, triggering swift regional condemnation of the Iran-backed Yemeni group. Turki Al-Maliki, spokesperson for the Saudi-led Coalition Forces, accused the Houthis of targeting the holy city and said it was the first such alleged attempt against Mecca in almost a decade.
Earlier this week, the Houthis launched ballistic missiles and drones towards several Saudi cities, including Khamis Mushait, Abha and Taif, reportedly injuring 13 civilians. The Houthis, however, categorically denied the Saudi allegation on Wednesday, accusing Riyadh of making “false accusations.” Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree maintained that the group’s operations were directed at Saudi oil facilities and military bases and posed no threat to the holy sites.
Saudi Arabia, for its part, has made its position unequivocally clear: the security of the holy sites is a “red line.” The Kingdom has also warned that it “will not hesitate to take the necessary and deterrent measures” against any threat to their security.
Prime Minister of Pakistan Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has called upon all parties to exercise maximum restraint, warning that the conflict is on the “brink of further escalation.” He stressed that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only sustainable path to peace, while simultaneously condemning the alleged attack in the strongest possible terms.
In emotionally charged remarks on Wednesday, the Prime Minister said: “There are no words sufficient to express the depth of pain and sorrow we feel toward this unforgivable and shameful deed.” At this critical juncture, one fundamental reality must be understood with absolute clarity: the sanctity, security and inviolability of the Holy Kaaba are matters of profound importance to Muslims everywhere and cannot be compromised under any circumstances.
Pakistan stands firmly with Saudi Arabia in safeguarding the holy sites, and the wider Muslim Ummah remains deeply concerned by any development that could endanger their security. The Holy Kaaba transcends national boundaries; it is at the heart of the faith of Muslims across the globe.
Let there be no ambiguity whatsoever: the Holy Kaaba is an ultimate red line for Muslims worldwide. Any act of aggression or threat against its sanctity must be treated with the utmost seriousness and responsibility. Those who contemplate any such reckless action must understand the extraordinary religious significance of the holy sites and the profound consequences that could follow from placing them in harm’s way.
At a time when the region is already facing grave tensions, wisdom, restraint, dialogue and responsible statecraft are imperative. The protection of Islam’s holiest sites must remain an absolute priority, and every effort must be made to ensure that they remain beyond the theatre of conflict.
