PESHAWAR – A mere Rs30 shopping bag landed fashion retailer Khaadi in court, and cost the lifestyle brand Rs50,000.
Peshawar consumer court ordered Khaadi Pakistan (SMC-Pvt) Ltd to refund customer Rs30 charged for a shopping bag, pay her Rs25,000 in compensation, and deposit another Rs25,000 as a fine with the government. The order was issued by Consumer Court Judge Nasrullah Khan Gandapur on September 16, 2026, in a case filed by Shafaq Aamir.
The dispute arose after Aamir bought clothes worth Rs7,000 from Khaadi’s University Road outlet near the Abdara BRT Station in Peshawar on December 20, 2025. Her receipt showed a separate Rs30 charge for a carrying bag.
The bag, however, was not an ordinary carrier. It carried Khaadi’s brand logo, a detail that became central to the court’s ruling.
Khaadi did not deny charging the customer Rs30. Its position was that the company was not legally bound to provide shopping bags free of charge and that customers could purchase a bag if they wanted one. The court examined the receipt and other material placed on record before reaching its decision under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Consumers Protection Act, 1997.
Judge Gandapur noted that Khaadi was charging the consumer for a bag that also promoted the company’s own brand. In its judgment, the court held that the arrangement amounted to an unfair trade practice under the relevant provisions of the law.
The court accepted the complaint and directed Khaadi to make three payments Rs30 refund to Shafaq Aamir for the shopping bag, Rs25,000 compensation to the complainant, and Rs25,000 fine to be deposited with the government. The court’s order means the company faces Rs50,030 in total financial liability arising from the case.
The judgment was announced on September 16, 2026, with the court directing that the case file be consigned to the record room after completion of the required formalities.
