ISLAMABAD – Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Field Marshal Asim Munir held telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
The exchange of views took place on Wednesday when the Iranian FM was in China on an official visit.
The latest regional developments and issues of mutual interest to both countries were discussed during the conversation, according to Iranian media.
A day earlier, Iranian FM Abbas Araghchi has called for a new regional framework in West Asia based on cooperation among neighboring countries, saying foreign military forces should have no role in the region.
Araghchi made the comments during talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on Wednesday, where the two officials discussed the changing regional situation and efforts to restore stability.
Araghchi said the recent conflict involving Iran and the United States and Israel has significantly altered the regional landscape. He argued that future arrangements should be built around dialogue and cooperation among countries in the region rather than outside intervention.
The Iranian foreign minister attributed the escalation to what he described as US-Israeli aggression against Iran. He said Iran’s resistance had prevented the opposing side from achieving its stated objectives.
Araghchi also raised concerns over what Tehran describes as repeated US violations of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which was aimed at bringing the conflict to an end. He said Iran remained committed to restoring calm while maintaining what it considers its national rights.
He added that Tehran was seeking better and peaceful relations with neighboring countries and had initiated discussions with regional governments as part of those efforts.
During the meeting, Araghchi also welcomed China’s position on the conflict, particularly Beijing’s criticism of actions it considers inconsistent with the principles of the UN Charter and its stance regarding the use of the UN Security Council.
Wang described the US military action against Iran as illegal and said lasting stability in West Asia would require political dialogue and diplomatic engagement.
The Chinese foreign minister also said Beijing was prepared to contribute to efforts aimed at reducing tensions, encouraging negotiations and supporting peace and stability in the region.
