On the other hand, the Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Health, Dr Zafar Mirza, said that arecord 2,636 cases were reported in the last 24 hours, the highest number in a day, so far.
“During the last 24 hours we saw 2,636 cases […] it is a big number and so far is the maximum we have seen in a 24-hour period,” Dr Mirza said. He said that on a global scale, we have seen almost 6 million cases, of which more than 362,000 are deaths and of the total confirmed cases, around 43%, which is about 2.5 million, have recovered too.
“Pakistan has a similar trend. Of the 64,745 confirmed cases, approximately 35% have completely recovered,” he said. Both Punjab and Sindh reported their highest single-day death tolls at 29 and 31, respectively. Thirty countries led by Costa Rica and the World Health Organisation have launched an initiative aimed at sharing vaccines, medicines and diagnostic tools to tackle the global coronavirus pandemic. While the developing nations’ push, called the Covid-19 Technology Access Pool, was welcomed by groups including Doctors Without Borders, a drug industry alliance questioned if it would really boost collaboration or broaden access to Covid-19 medicines.
