Punjab Faces Flood Risks as Monsoon Rains Continue

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has warned of flood risks as fourth spell of monsoon rain is expected to continue until August 5.
According to the authority, the Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi and Sutlej rivers are flowing within normal ranges.

However, low-level flooding has been observed at Kalabagh and Chashma on the Indus River, while water flow in the hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan remains normal.

PDMA said the Indus River is carrying around 263,000 cusecs of water at Kalabagh and approximately 294,000 cusecs at Chashma. It also reported moderate flooding in Nala Palkho near Wazirabad, where water discharge has reached 3,600 cusecs, while Nala Basantar in Narowal district is experiencing low-level flooding.

The authority warned that continued rainfall over upper catchment areas during the fourth monsoon spell could increase water levels in the eastern rivers and nearby streams over the coming days.

PDMA Director General Muhammad Saif Anwar Jappa said there is a possibility of urban flooding in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Faisalabad and Multan. He added that Murree, Galiyat and other hilly regions also face the risk of landslides due to persistent rainfall.

Jappa urged residents living near riverbanks and flood-prone areas to shift to safer locations whenever required. He said the Punjab government has established relief camps in affected areas, where displaced families are being provided with accommodation, meals, safe drinking water, healthcare and other essential facilities.

He also appealed to the public to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary movement during adverse weather, and stay away from rivers, canals and streams.

Parents were advised to keep children under close supervision and ensure they do not enter flowing water bodies.
