PRIME Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif paid a two-day official visit to Türkiye from 3-4 July 2026. This visit was not merely a routine diplomatic engagement; rather, it is being viewed as a significant turning point in Pakistan’s foreign policy. While Pakistan and Türkiye have enjoyed centuries-old religious, cultural and historical ties, the need of the hour is to move beyond emotional affinity and transform this relationship into a robust economic, technological and strategic partnership.
Pakistan is striving for economic stability, greater foreign investment and higher exports, while Türkiye has established itself as a strong industrial and defence power. It has not only strengthened its economy but has also achieved remarkable progress in defence manufacturing, construction, transportation, energy and technology. Türkiye’s expertise in drone technology, advanced weapons production and large-scale infrastructure projects is internationally recognized. For Pakistan, this presents a golden opportunity to benefit from Türkiye’s experience.
During Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s meetings with the Turkish leadership, extensive discussions were held on cooperation in trade, investment, energy, defence, infrastructure and technology. Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to increasing bilateral trade to $5 billion. If this target is achieved through practical measures, it could generate new employment opportunities in Pakistan, promote industrial development and provide fresh momentum to the country’s economy. Likewise, joint ventures in the defence industry could significantly strengthen Pakistan’s defence capabilities, particularly in naval and air defence systems, which hold strategic importance for both nations.
The energy sector was another major focus of the visit. Pakistan continues to face an energy crisis, whereas Türkiye possesses extensive experience in this field. Turkish investment in renewable energy projects, including hydropower, solar and wind energy, could prove highly beneficial for Pakistan.
The visit is also significant from a regional political perspective. Given the challenges confronting the Middle East, South Asia and the wider Muslim world, closer cooperation between Pakistan and Türkiye can reinforce a common voice for the Muslim Ummah. The two countries share similar positions on international issues such as Kashmir and Palestine, reflecting strong diplomatic coordination. In this context, the visit is regarded as important not only for bilateral relations but also for the broader Muslim world.
At a time when global politics is rapidly evolving, major powers are competing for influence and new regional alliances are emerging, closer Pakistan–Türkiye cooperation can provide strategic balance for both countries. This partnership has the potential to deliver not only economic benefits but also greater diplomatic influence on the international stage.
