ISLAMABAD – A life lost can never be replaced, but the law provides financial compensation to victim’s heirs through Diyat, aka blood money. Pakistani government announced a new Diyat value for 2026-27, fixing the amount at nearly Rs. 2 crore for compensation payments in cases covered under the country’s criminal law.
The government announced major revision in the value of Diyat (blood money) for the upcoming financial year 2026-27, fixing the amount at Rs. 19.35 million (one crore 93 Lac 52 thousand).
According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Finance, the new Diyat value has been determined under Section 323 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and will come into effect from July 1, 2026. The notification stated that the minimum value of Diyat for the financial year 2026-27 has been set at Rs. 19,352,390, equivalent to the market value of 30,630 grams of silver.
Under Pakistani law, the federal government determines the minimum Diyat amount every year by calculating the value of silver, as prescribed under Section 323(1) and (2) of the PPC.
Diyat is financial compensation paid to the legal heirs of a person killed, particularly in cases of qatl-e-khata (unintentional or accidental killing), and in certain cases as part of a legal settlement. Commonly referred to as “blood money”, the payment serves as financial compensation for the loss of life and is awarded according to court decisions and applicable laws.
The amount is not fixed permanently. Each year, the government revises the minimum Diyat value based on the price of 30,630 grams of silver, ensuring the amount reflects prevailing market rates.
With the latest announcement, the Diyat amount for 2026-27 has crossed the Rs. 19 million mark, setting a new benchmark for compensation payments under Pakistan’s criminal law.
