KARACHI – Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDC) has announced the presence of lithium in formation water at concentrations comparable to the higher-tier lithium-bearing brines reported internationally including those under active commercial development in Europe and North America.
The finding emerged from advanced geochemical analysis of produced formation water during successful testing of a high-temperature geothermal well in Sindh under OGDC’s pilot geothermal program.
Lithium is the backbone of the global energy transition: essential for electric vehicle batteries, grid-scale storage, and next-generation clean technologies.
With global demand projected to multiply over the coming decade, countries with domestic lithium resources hold a strategic advantage in the critical-minerals value chain. Geothermal brines are increasingly recognized worldwide as one of the most sustainable pathways to lithium production.
Building on these results, OGDC has planned an expanded technical evaluation program to establish the regional extent, continuity, and commercial viability of lithium-bearing resources. The program includes detailed brine chemistry profiling, and resource confirmation studies aligned with international standards.
OGDC professionals are closely engaged with leading international consultants on next steps.
This breakthrough underscores the untapped subsurface potential of Pakistan and OGDC’s intent to lead the country’s entry into the global critical-minerals economy.
