According to a KWSC statement issued on Sunday, the outage occurred in the third phase of the Dhabeji pumping station after a cable developed a fault. Technical teams are currently carrying out repair work to restore the electricity supply.
The corporation said the fault has temporarily taken three pumps out of operation, affecting the station’s water transmission capacity.
A KWSC spokesperson said the interruption could reduce Karachi’s daily water supply by nearly 75 million gallons, potentially impacting water availability across multiple neighbourhoods.
Among the areas expected to experience reduced supply are North Nazimabad, Nazimabad, Gulberg Town, New Karachi, Landhi, Korangi, and parts of Scheme 33.
The spokesperson said KWSC officials are closely monitoring the situation and remain in constant coordination with K-Electric to expedite power restoration. Residents have been urged to conserve water and avoid unnecessary usage until normal operations resume.
Dhabeji is Karachi’s primary water pumping facility, and uninterrupted electricity is essential for its operation. Even brief power interruptions can significantly affect the city’s water distribution network.
The latest disruption comes just weeks after a separate power outage at the K-2 pumping station led to the shutdown of three major pumps, highlighting the vulnerability of Karachi’s water supply system to electricity-related disruptions.
