IN today’s world, economic progress is no longer determined solely by roads, bridges or traditional industries. Increasingly, it is driven by technological innovation, artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, data analytics and digital infrastructure. Nations that invest in these emerging technologies today will be the ones leading tomorrow’s global economy. It is, therefore, encouraging to see our government’s growing focus on technology and innovation. This shift in priorities is both timely and necessary if Pakistan is to accelerate its development and compete effectively in an increasingly digital world.
The inauguration of Sky47’s Karakoram-01 AI cloud and data centre in Rawalpindi by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is an important step in this direction. Designed to support AI, machine learning, high-performance computing, cybersecurity and sovereign cloud services, the facility represents far more than another infrastructure project. It provides the digital backbone needed to support government institutions, businesses, financial organizations, healthcare providers and the country’s growing technology sector. At a time when data has become one of the world’s most valuable resources, the ability to securely store and process information within national borders is both an economic and strategic advantage. The project also reflects Pakistan’s recognition that future economic growth will increasingly depend on knowledge, innovation and digital capabilities. Investments in advanced technology infrastructure create opportunities for entrepreneurship, attract investment, generate high-value employment and strengthen the country’s digital economy. With a young population and an expanding pool of skilled IT professionals, Pakistan possesses the human capital needed to benefit from such initiatives. The challenge now is to maintain this momentum. The government must continue investing in digital infrastructure, research and development, cybersecurity and policies that encourage innovation and private-sector participation. If we stay firmly on this course, we can not only accelerate economic development but also establish ourselves as one of the region’s leading countries in technology and emerging industries. In an increasingly competitive global economy, this is the path that offers the greatest promise for sustainable growth and long-term prosperity.
