Happy birthday, President Asif Ali Zardari

JULY 26 marks the birthday of President Asif Ali Zardari, a political figure whose long imprisonment remains one of the most debated chapters in Pakistan’s political history. He spent nearly fifteen years in prison without securing a conviction in the cases brought against him. Throughout that period, he maintained his innocence and endured severe hardship while remaining committed to the state.

The modern era has transformed the way history is recorded and understood. Advances in computing, the internet, smartphones and, more recently, artificial intelligence have made information more accessible than ever before. Today, particularly among Generation Z and Generation Alpha, AI-powered platforms and digital search tools have become primary sources for exploring historical and political events.

Supporters of President Zardari argue that his years in prison represent an extraordinary example of political endurance. They maintain that despite allegations of harsh treatment and torture during his incarceration, he never called upon his party workers to resort to violence or confrontation against state institutions. Even though international conventions such as the UN Convention against Torture and the Tokyo Declaration were already in place, he chose patience over agitation.

Following the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto on December 27, 2007, President Zardari’s message, “Pakistan Khappay” (Pakistan must endure), was widely seen by his supporters as a call for national unity during one of the country’s darkest moments. Rather than encouraging unrest, he urged the nation to remain united and pledged to work with the people and state institutions to build a stronger Pakistan.

After assuming the presidency in 2008, President Zardari promoted reconciliation and national harmony. His government ratified the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the UN Convention against Torture (CAT) in 2010. His supporters also credit the Pakistan People’s Party with introducing the Torture and Custodial Death (Prevention and Punishment) Act, 2022, and acknowledge the Sindh government’s enactment of the Medico-Legal Act, 2023, as significant steps towards strengthening human rights and the justice system.

His admirers further credit his earlier presidential tenure (2008–2013) with promoting regional diplomacy, strengthening Pakistan’s strategic partnership with China, reviving engagement with Russia and Iran, and pursuing balanced relations with the United States and Western countries. They believe his current term continues to focus on national development, with First Lady Aseefa Bhutto Zardari playing an active public role.

As President Asif Ali Zardari celebrates his 71st birthday, his supporters view his political journey as a story of resilience, patience and reconciliation. They hope his leadership will continue to contribute to Pakistan’s progress, prosperity and stability.
